It’s Tuesday morning, your alarm clock just went off after having hit snooze 7 times
already. You have a long day of zoom calls, in addition to working on projections for the week,
your end of the month reports and setting your budget for the new month. You also have a
yoga class that starts at 9am but it's 8:30 and you haven’t even had coffee. So, grab coffee from
your local barista on the road kind of day as you rush out of the house to make it to the yoga
studio by 9:05 and namaste your apology for being late again. Your unconscious reasoning
behind this repetitive daily routine is “I am not a morning person!”.
Being a morning person versus a night owl is not the issue here dear Latte’s Babes! The
real issue here is, “Does my daily routine motivates me to get up every day? Is it in sync with my
energy, my body, my well-being?” If you daily routines doesn’t get you excited, then don’t be
surprised that you keep snoozing that alarm!
There are many tools that teach you how to schedule your day. We are not going to talk
about this right now. What we want you to do is make a series of lists. First list is what are the
things that you are currently doing that makes you happy, ecstatic, filled to the brim with joy! Is
that yoga class a thing that makes you happy? Is waking up early something that makes you
want to conquer the day? Is your job or career a thing that fills you with joy? Is laundry
therapeutic to you? (Don’t knock it, for some of us, loading the washing machine is actually
therapy, lol!).
Now that you have your list, is there anything about the items listed that you would
want to tweak? For example, you love that yoga class, but you are not a morning person. Why
not switch your schedule around and go to an afternoon class? You will still get your asana on,
but your energy level and enthusiasm might be better in the afternoon and that class can then
serve as a stress reliever of the day.
Once you have the list of things that make you excited every day, make a list of the
activities that you have to do but don’t enjoy. For instance, I hate with a passion doing a trash
run. Every fiber of my being loathes doing the walk to stinky trash from my house to the
dumpster. I love mornings, and I don’t want to pollute my morning energy with a task that I
loathe (picture the Grinch with Christmas and that’s me with the trash run!). So, I schedule that
task for later afternoon before I have to pick up my little one from school, so that it is quick and
done.
Lastly, listen to your body! If you know that you love mornings and get more things
done in the morning, then work your schedule accordingly. If you are a night owl, don’t try to
be part of the 5am club! If you can’t change your work schedule, but you are trying to build an
empire on the side, time block and stick to it, but do it in a way that makes you look forward to
the hour or two. If you are building your empire from home, have a designated office space or
area that is inviting and makes you want to sit down and work. There really is such a thing as
feng shui!
These lists serve as the foundation to developing a daily schedule based on what you
want your daily life to look like and will motivate you to not hit snooze! Remember, if you don’t
look forward to your daily activities, the power is within you to change them!
Thanks, a LATTE!
